Common questions

What court should I file in?

In California, most civil, family, probate, and criminal cases are filed in the Superior Court of the county where the case belongs. Enter a ZIP code or county name in this Court Lookup Tool to see courthouse addresses and phone numbers. Federal cases go to a U.S. District Court, not the superior court.

What court handles family law in my county in California?

Family law in California is heard in the Superior Court of the county. Use this tool with your county name (for example Los Angeles or Sacramento) to see that county’s superior courthouse locations. Then call the listed number to confirm the family-law division or filing window.

Can I e-file in this court?

Where California e-filing is available, each courthouse card includes an “E-File in this Court” link to 123efile.com. Assisted filing through 123 Legal Support is also available when a county is not in the self-service portal.
